I am pleased to offer a number of webinar opportunities. These are a combination of trunk show/lecture and demo. They can be customized for your group. They are all now available for safe, in person events as well.
Contact me directly via email: cheryl@cherylarkison.com with any questions or to book.
Through Quilters’ Playcation I am also offering a series of live online events where we can gather and play together. Make sure to check out the schedule to see everything coming up.
Trunk Shows/Lectures (60 - 75 Minutes)
Settle in at home for a prepared presentation, delivered live to your sewing room. Or frankly, wherever you’ve made yourself comfy. I invite you into my own sewing room for a chat, sharing quilts, hopefully a few laughs, and an extension of our community.
Live events are also possible.
Ideal for guilds and stores to host the event for members/customers. Pick from one of these options:
BECOMING A 5 STAR QUILTER
What makes a truly great quilter? The pursuit of perfection drives a lot of quilters, but being a great quilter is far more than price winning quilts and the approval of the quilt police. This trunk show cover the 5 Star Qualities that make a truly great quilter. None of them depend on a perfect 1/4” seam allowance either.
AN IKEA BAG OF SCRAPS
Far too often I hear people say that they can’t do scrappy because 1. It looks too messy or 2. They don’t have pretty scraps. In this lecture and trunk show I will show you all the pleasures of using your scraps. It starts with sorting and storing and moves on to the many, many ways to use every last piece of fabric.
IMPROV IS MY LOVE LANGUAGE
Loosely inspired on the idea of the five love languages for showing and feeling love, this presentation shares my theories on the love languages of quilters. Mine just happens to be Improv. Want to find out yours? Tune into this fun presentation. Illustrated with quilts and stories. Knowing your love language will help you understand your quilting joys and frustrations.
PLAYGROUND GAMES FOR QUILTERS
Far too often we focus on the results, the product, the finish line in lieu of the process. A huge part of the process is simply playing. Play is an important part of a child’s development but I don’t think it should stop when we become adults. The presentation is all about adding a spirit of play back in to our creative pursuits. Presents a series of games for both the individual quilter and guilds to engage with to explore their playful side.
SHOP YOUR STASH
It’s one thing to buy fabric, it’s quite another to create your own personal fabric store. No matter your budget, creating a stash you can and will use is possible. So much of it comes down to understanding the stories our fabric tells with colour and pattern then using those fabrics effectively in your quilt designs.
Short Workshops/Demos (3 Hours)
Take a short class with your guildmates or friends old and new. These short classes are a fun step in to online learning with live instruction. You can sew along or just watch, you are the master of your play.
Also available for in person events.
Ideal for guilds and stores to host the event for members/customers. Pick from one of these options:
HOME
Using improv technique to create a unique block that both spells home and shows home. Your HOME block can then be turned into a simple pillow or be the start of a fun, perfectly appropriate quilt. A portion of the proceeds from this class are donated to the Calgary Emergency Women’s Shelter.
SLABS
A focused workshop on the Slab Technique from Sunday Morning Quilts. The class includes a discussion on colour and value, detailed instruction on improvised piecing to make a slab, and potential uses for this made fabric.
IMPROV APPLIQUE
Covering the basics of needle turn applique with an improv twist. It does not require a lot of prep, so when the idea hits you can get right to stitching. This is entirely a handwork class, but the results can be adapted to machine applique.
ONE COLOUR CHALLENGE (Improv or Precision)
Learn the lessons of value, texture, saturation, hue, and using prints all while making versions of a favourite block. Grab a bin of your favourite colour and be ready to experiment.
All Day Workshops (5-6 Hours)
For those who really embrace online learning we can spend the day together sewing and laughing. We will play and experiment. You may not finish the day with a quilt, but you will definitely be ahead of the game creatively.
In person opportunities also available.
Ask your guild or local store for hosting options.
IMPROV LETTERING
Say what you want to say, but say it in a quilt. From simple holidays greetings to profound statements, use words in quilts to convey your message. This class covers planning and construction for any letter. This is an improv technique. Fabric selection and value are also discussed in the class.
SCRAPTASTIC
Don't throw away your little scraps! Those bits and pieces have excellent potential, this class will show you how to use every last scrap. Discusses sorting and storing, in addition to numerous exercises to truly embrace your scraps.
TRADITIONAL VARIATIONS
Take a traditional block and change it up. Play with technique, scale, colour, value, and more as your take the familiar and turn it into something fantastic and fun. Pick from these three traditional blocks: Churn Dash, Sawtooth Star, and Pinwheel.
ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONS
Whether it be landscapes, shapes, or even just a feeling, this extended workshop will help you take your idea and translate it with fabric and piecing. Each student will start their own unique piece with a helping hand, encouragement, and a guide for their play. Not necessarily improv, but it could be.
